Default Sturgeon Bay!

Well me and the wife took a kid free trip to sturgeon bay. It was a nice well deserved break. We camped the first two days at Potawatomi state park. Then stayed waterfront twodays at beach harbor resort. The scenery and attractions were nice.

Now for the fishing report. I really wanted to target walleye, however they are few and far between in sturgeon bay itself during the summer months. The first couple days we would sight see the harbor towns of door county and I would have a fishing pole in tow. I caught perch in little sturgeon bay from the harbor, but nothing to write home about. I had by best luck smallmouth shorefishing in ephraim and at Gil's rock. I managed several smallmouth each day. Natural colors were a must in the clear water. Lots of green pumpkin and watermelon plastics. Tubes and small swim baits on a drop shot did well. Also my 3/16 ounce drop shot weights that are my strip mine go to were to small in the deep choppy water. I upgraded to 5/16 ounce. I had high expectations for these big sturgeon bay smallmouth, however our biggest was only 18 inches. The sheer amount of fish we caught was staggering though.

For the final day we were water bound. I rented a 18 Lund with the intentions of fishing Green Bay for walleye. Then the boat rental fella made it real clear I would sacrifice my deposit if I left sturgeon bay with the boat. We fished the south shoreline in between miller harbor and Potawatomi state park and absolutely hammered the smallmouth. Again none of the five or six pound Giants, but dozens if not hundreds of 2 pounders. Caught two fish on one cast twice of a rat l trap. My wife doubled on a husky jerk as well. We spot locked the min Kota in 25 feet of water and casted anywhere boulders dropped of into deeper water. Every spot we fished produced. Every presentation produced.

One of the many highlights was when I released a guy hooked smallmouth that absolutely inhaled a blade bait. Shortly after swimming of it surfaced on its side. I was pretty sad to see this, but as it was floundering about a large pike came and attacked. The smallmouth got a second wind and kicked free. Then a few seconds later the pike blew up on it and dragged it under never to be seen again. There are some very big pike in sturgeon bay. It was a blast and I will be returning to pull walleye through the ice this winter.

Sounds like a great trip and thanks for the report.

If you go back again in the summer and stay at Potawatomi, fish the shoreline at night of the park if you can get to it. You can get some big walleye there as they come up to feed at night. Sometimes they're there, sometimes not. Start several hundred yards south of the boat ramps. Try casting husky jerks, lipless crankbaits, or small crankbaits. Experiment with retrieves.

People troll the area but I've had success at night from a boat casting down the shoreline. There's a deep drop right off of shore.

Looks like the wife out fished you
Is "basstiality" the same as sleeping with the fishes?

I prefer to Die on my feet than Live on my knees

2sac is not bassalarro material.

A very nice read .

Lo the angler. He riseth in the early morning and upsetteth the whole household. Mighty are his preparations. He goeth forth with great hope in his heart and when the day is far spent, he returneth, smelling of strong drink, and the truth is not in him.

I'll take that action any day. Those lake bass have alot more fight in them than the river smallmouth around here. As far as the wife outfishing you, don't feel bad you'll top her next time.

Very nice post Joe. Thanks for posting it. Congrats on the getaway. Feels like a long time ago now right ?
Seems like forever since I was up there as well. Plans to change that up a bit this year. We'll see how that plays out. Often times, I look to partner up if you have any interest give me a heads up.

Although I understand you have a score to even up with your bride on the water hey?
