Default 31" BEAST (pic)

I have been up here fishing Lake Vermillion MN all week for bass and walleye. In my "new moon marble eyes" thread, we have been doing pretty well trolling at night for big walleye. But we also have been catching them all day long, casting for them and for bass. Middle of the day, blue bird sky? They are still in 8 FOW on the prowl!

Rock bars, points, gravel flats, are all holding big day time walleye. Active fish seem to be in less than 12 FOW, and we have even see fish cruising as shallow as 3-4. Big 5" grubs on 1/4 oz heads has been the top day time producer.

A 30" fish is one of my lifetime goals. Have caught a ton of big eyes, but never cracked the 30 mark. Even on this trip, we have caught probably a dozen so far 25-28"s... But the 30 has eluded me all these years. I atleast came a little closer yesterday afternoon. Mid-day, overcast, light rain, with the pattern I mentioned above.

My buddy lands this beast. 31" on the dot. Biggest eye I have ever seen live. Brings me that much closer to my own.

We fished the west end a little bit for largemouths, and found a few eyes in the weeds. But this trip we spent most of our time on the east end for smallies. This is the side we got most of our walleye action too, since they really seemed to be keying in on rock bars

Nice fish, I've been fishing Lake Vermillion for 25 years and have never caught anything that big. I went in July 2012 and didn't catch a single eye while I was there. I know the dead of summer is not the ideal time to go but it was the only time I could get up there. My grandparents live on Everett Bay Across from the Indian Casino. We mostly troll of walleyes using three way rigs and bottom bouncers, occasionally we jig but very rarely cast for walleyes and 95% of the time its with live bait. Ive never fished the west end. Mostly target Spider, Nyberg, Ely, Comet, Jack Rabbit and Cherry Islands. Thanks for info. My last few trips up there haven't been very good. When I talk to my grandpa he says the last few years seem to be down. A few years ago I was casting a swim bait in about 4 feet of water and caught a nice 24" walleye, that was within an hour of arriving but I never caught another walleye the whole trip. I'm in a rut right now!

Red Lake Ontario my best bud lands a 32.5 inch walleye! No exaggeration either. In 15 years of mounting fish and lots of big walleye, the LONGEST I've ever done or seen was a 31 incher. BUT, this 32.5 inch walleye that my buddy caught was obviously spawned out and probably hadn't eaten anything for weeks. She literally had no belly and it actually sunk IN where it should have protruded. The fish only weighed 5.5 pounds!!!! A long, skinny fish. Skinniest, ugliest walleye I've ever seen! I'll bet even healthy and full of eggs she wouldn't have broken 10 pounds!!!!

Used to love Red lake until new owners took over. Great eye fishing. Get on em and you can have 20 in an hour. Lake trout weren't bad either.
Please release me, let me go.
