Default Kittys

All this flathead talk has had me eager to land a big one. I've been catching flathead from the Kankakee river system for the last 10 years or so with nothing over ten pounds. I finally decided to try for some larger fish. Armed with a cooler full of 8-10 inch carp I decided I was gonna go for a giant and if after a few hours with no action I'd turn them into cut bait and go for channels. With a 2 ounce no roll sinker and a 8 ott hook on a slip sinker rig I landed this beauty about a hour in. It's was 41 inches long didn't get a weight. I will definitely be doing more flathead fishing now that I know I can get them this size. I've never caught a harder fighting fish in my life. It easily out fought even my biggest musky.

Over 5 minutes but under 10. I was so pumped that's the best estimate I can give. I Was using a 6500 Abu Garcia and a 7,6 inch xh bass pro shops graphite series musky rod. 80 pound braid and 24 pound mono leader.I've used that combo for large blues on the Ohio as well as sucker fishing musky. Never had a fish put a bend in it like that one did.

Big ones like that tend to play tug-o-war. They dont run like the smaller ones, it's almost like they move slow and tend to hold their ground.

My bait clicker might have clicked 4 times when he hit. I thought a branch or something caught my line so I figured it'd be a good time to check my bait. My theory is he just inhaled my offering and didn't swim until I started to reel. And yes I must admit when my brother and I went wading for smallmouth this weekend I probably mentioned we should go catfish in at least a dozen times. I will certainly be targeting large flathead more often. BTW this fish was released and even after the lengthy battle he swam away vigorously as soon as I set him back in the river.

Ahhhhhh...memories!!! My pb did the exact same thing. I thought it was snagged on a tree branch because i had a tough time reeling it in. Not until i felt it pumping that i knew it was a big cat.
