Kentucky Lake; West Tenessee area

Postby J.R. in Plainfield » Fri Mar 30, 2012 11:19 am

I've been fishing the New Johnsonville area of Kentucky Lake alot lately. Water temps are 69-71 F, the water is stained but not bad for Kylake, and we are at winter pool. The bass and crappie are spawning. They have already moved into the bays and are hitting shad patterns. I have been catching them on a variety of baits, and their preference seems to change day-to-day. I've caught keepers on crank baits (chartruese red eye shad, norman middle N, KVD 1.5), topwater (spook jr. and Pop'r), spinnerbait (chart/wht tandembrass willow & silver colorado), zoom swimmin fluke in pearl and on a texas rigged lizard. I would say they might bite anything right now, depending on the day. I've had my best results on underwater points with current (which is not to say they are on the main river) and rocky shorelines with 3-5 feet of water. I haven't been to the very backs of the bays, but have caught them half way back. They like boat docks or wood lay-downs, and if you go by something like that that's isolated, cast at it several times before moving on.

I would suggest an urgency to get to the lake before easter because I think with the water temps and weather, everything after Easter will be post spawn pattern.

Hope this helps;

Is the lake still closed by the 68 bridge collapse??? I usually go to the Jonathan Creek area, by Aurora...

Try some silver and black countdown rapalas. Guaranteed fish
Is "basstiality" the same as sleeping with the fishes?

The Rt. 68 bridge is a little too far north for me. I heard they were fast tracking the repair, but that's about all I know.

Sorry....

Went out this morning and caught 35-40 bass. Biggest were 3-3.5 pounds, and only a few keepers. Did get on a topwater bite that got me 20 in the first hour. Don't get them that way very often, but it was alot of fun. Water temps as warm as 73. Lots of boats on the water today. Saw my first waverunner, and there are people swimming at the beach.

Well, going to hit Kinkaid Lake next weekend, so I'll miss the best Kentucky Lake fishing days next weekend.

Tight Lines!
