Thought I would share some insight and pictures from my recent trip to Leech lake in Minn. fishing for Walleye, Northern, Perch (Crappie/Rock Bass).
A little background on the trip, we stayed at Chippewa Lodge, this was my 14th (?) year and we a total of 23 guys on the trip.
Following is a recap and insight to the trip:
Walleye-
Slow bite, we used traditional methods, jigging minnows, throwing deep dive/suspending baits. Only a few keepers caught. (Green and orange jigs with Fatheads)(We fished: The Narrows (off Bear Island), Headquarters, West side of Bear Island)
Perch, Rock Bass, Crappie-
All caught around reed beds off shore jigging green jigs tipped with Fatheads and throwing mini Mepps spinners and or Rapalla's.
We would be on the Perch and drift over a new reed bed and get Crappie, the Rock Bass. Fish all mixed up on the beds from the wind and "cruising" pike and muskie. (Headquarters, Miller Bay, Boy Bay)
Northern-
We fished everywhere for Pike, was a pretty good year, fish came in on traditional spoons and all in the 5-9lb pound range.
Other-
This year I brought a bunch of old tackle and used to fish for the days targeted fish. I had the best success using an old gold Little Doctor spoon (in a hammered finish) and a wooden jointed Heddon Vamp lure in Green scale finish.
The Northern did not know how to react to the jointed lure, they would follow it in and smack it with there snouts, jump over it (literally) grab it in the center and run with it (I took out the middle hood). When the Pike had not been "playing" with it the Bass would immediately hit it. I think I caught 10 Bass on it all at least 4 lbs.
