Waukegan 8-18

Postby Ichthyguy » Mon Aug 20, 2012 8:54 am

Got out early Saturday and had lines in the water by 4am. Set up in 125 fow straight out of the harbor. Fish 135 fow-170 East to West and back. Marked alot of fish all day at 100 feet down, however ee ended up with only 2-10 pound kings and a super fat laker. Both kings had some nice plump egg in them, I will save them for ice fishing this year. All three fish came on 3 lead SWR 100 feet down with a Hey Bebe spoon.

Hope the weather stays good for the next couple weeks.

At least you had some fish. I know guys that day that got the skunk. One thing you can try is when you catch a fish and it is slow, work that area from all directions. From your chart you only had a east and wes troll. Our best direection that day was SSE.

Good advice as always. Thanks.

I have not payed a lot of attention to trolling direction, typically follow the wind with my smaller boat.

I'm starting to mess around with leadcore a bit. Trying to catch more fish after sun up.

Leadcore is great but as of late, you better be adding weight. 450 copper was key on Saturday!

On Sunday when we went 3 for 6, we heard again of boats going 0 for 0. Deep was the key and I agree with BR about adding weight to the leadcore lines, we've started adding 1/4 coho weights with leads to bring in down another 10ft plus, which has helped. It's are SSWR combo.

We also do crazy ivan's now and again which really confuses the fish. With auotpilot on my dads boat, we can do this without trying.... :)30 It's the old turn dial and sometimes it really works.

Can't get out again until Sunday...Depending on the weather, we will be starting shallower and running shallower the first hour to try for some of those staging kings. They are there in the early morning.

Let the experimenting begin!
I have only scratch the surface of trolling. I dont know if there is always the need to switch the program, its just fun to see what else works, and when?

That is so true Joel, but then again who would have thought 11" paddles would be what they are today! Not to mention all the wacky names for lures and flies, like Browmance, Dill Pickle and my favorite Proctologist  We going shopping ffor food/doctors or are we fishing...
