Eagle Lake Canada report {pics}

Postby Fonzie » Thu Jul 02, 2009 5:28 pm

I finally made a much anticipated trip up to Eagle Lake with a friend from work. His family has been going up there for 4 generations and own an outstanding cabin on Eagle river.
We each had six days off work, which meant we had to use two days driving back and forth and that left four days to fish...

The first day the weather cooperated and after a little work finding a productive pattern, we decided to go to my friends "can't miss" smallie spot. Well we found fish all right but they were walleye and northerns.
At one point I caught nice fish on 4 consecutive casts. We kept catching slot walleye {18"-23"} and it took some work to catch walleye small enough to eat. {When we caught walleye over 23", we tossed those back}.
We actually lost track of how many fish we caught which was great and raised my hopes for the final three days, but alas it was not meant to be...

Here's a decent slot fish caught casting a #7 black/gold shad rap into 5' of water over the tops of emerging weeds.

During the last three days of our trip, a BRUTAL cold front came through which dropped the temps 20+ degrees along with nasty 25 to 35mph winds and non stop rain. I have never in my life seen such wind and rain that never stoppped, not once, not ever :( .
Sure we got out a few times those last three days, but crossing the fat part of Eagle Lake in the wind and rain was quite the experience...
The brutal wind did not allow for any type of finesse fishing because even in a sheltered bay we were still being blown every which way.
Luckily we still caught some fish but I didn't take many pictures because of the rain.

Here is a pike caught when the rain miraculosely turned to a mist for 90 seconds.

Even with mother nature giving us a royal screwing I still had a great time. While hoping for a break in the weather that never came, my buddy and I spent our time talking about life, love, women, etc. Great memories were made.

Way to go Glen. Nice fish and it sounded like a great trip. Gotta get out to Geneva this fall with the "Double secret probation" bait. Can't wait. Again nice post.

Eagle Lake is a great destination trip. Even though the weather beat up on you guys I am glad you had a good time. Eagle Lake can even make Delavan or Geneva feel like a CCFP when you get back. Hopefully you can do it again under nicer conditions. I have a friend with a house up there too, just no time to get up there and fish with him.

Love those Canadian eyes! Nice going :)2

Its amazing isn't it? On most outings we take there always seems to be a front around.. I suppose, they're always around. We just wish that on a fishing trip they would quiet down a bit more often then not.

Thanks Glenn enjoyed your post and pictures.

I'm glad you guys understand my pain. Missing out on fishing most of those last three days because of the weather really bothers me  .

The perch and walleye fish fry sure were good though

The "Big Eagle", or Eagle Bay, part of the lake has some great fishing, possibly the best in the whole system. The problem is when the weather doesn't cooperate, fishing and navigating can be a real downer. Me and my dad had some great fishing last year and the last 2 days of our trip were pretty much ruined due to 30 mph winds. It's definitely a bummer and I can relate to what you are saying.

FishinMatt: You got that right. When my son and I were at Andy Meyers resort we took a fly in to another lake. We were flying about 15 minutes and I asked the pilot what lake that was below us. He said we are still on Eagle Lake. We had perfect weather when we were there, It rained
about a half an hour one day, but we were about to go back to the camp anyway.

Thanks for the report. A good friend was a little east of Kenora and had the same weather. He got knocked out of his bass boat by wind and waves over 36' of water. Felt lucky to be alive to tell the story.

Nice fish Glenn. I didn't realize this was your post until now.
We had some rough weather too. Not rain, but we froze our butts off this year.
