Camp fuel vs Propane

Postby bakechad » Sun Sep 26, 2010 7:11 pm

I need to purchase a camp stove and lantern.

I have been talking to others at scout camping events and the people that seem to know a lot about camping swear by camp fuel stoves and lanterns. But it looks like most of the retail stores are phasing out camp fuel items, including the fuel.

So my question is, should I go with the camp fuel appliances or the propane?

Thanks

Chad

X2
Is "basstiality" the same as sleeping with the fishes?

Propane is fine but the Dual Fuel stoves and lanterns would be the way to go. Burns white gas(Coleman fuel) or unleaded gas. You should never have to search far for fuel. JMHO

Depends on where your are camping. If your close to a road, propane. If your miles from a road, you can carry a lot more fuel in bottles.

The fuel works better IMO, but is more dangerous to work with. Weigh the pro's and con's.

Back in the 50s and 60s I used White gas. In 71 I outfitted a V W Camper with propane and have never looked back since. Get a 20 pound tank and the hose plus fitting and you are good to go. Never had a problem since, getting the tank refilled.

You can't fly with the white gas lanterns and stoves, even if they're empty.

edit: I when I mentioned dual-fuel, I meant the white gas/propane combo. It also means white gas/unleaded, which changes things. For general use, propane vs liquid fuel if you can only have one, propane all the way. The fittings to connect to a 20lb barbecue can aren't too expensive, either. You can convert a white gas stove to propane fairly easily. White gas puts out more heat than propane, and unleaded gas is the most cost-efficient of all camp fuels.

I prefer propane because it is more portable and it lasts longer. I tried those portable fuel powered stoves before but finding a retailer of fuel during a camp is so much pain.

Propane. Safer and cleaner, and for me easier to work with. there is less to go wrong with propane and yo can't spill it. People who know a lot about camping and have been doing it a long time will typically say fuel. Fuel is a bit old school. I believe it's like Pavlovs dog, the smell of the fuel is part of camping to them and thats why they prefer it.

X-2 on this... I have a propane garage heater and it only takes about 10 minutes for it to burn my eyes... I've been using white gas for 40 years... Best way in the world to scare the crap out of kids... 1/2 cup when they aren't looking???? Whooosh!!!! Makes a decent charcoal lighter too...

Duel fuel stoves use unleaded gas. Available everywhere and cheaper than white gas or propane.
