First bowfin/Bowfin PSA

Postby PowernFinesse » Wed May 11, 2011 2:27 pm

Unfortunately I don't have a pic of it though because if you've never caught a bowfin (like myself), you don't realize how angry they are. Not only did this big dog (I estimate he was around 7-8 pounds) rip off a good 30 yards of line on his initial run, but he also tried to bite me as I tried to unhook him. What I should have done was beach him and pose for a photo. Instead I was in waist deep water with a toothy critter thrashing around as I tried to get two trebs out of his mouth. I'm lucky none of the hooks landed in my hand as he escaped. He sort of looked like this male, but his fins were much more vibrant (thanks for the photo internet). I wish I would've got a pic with him. Real pretty fish.

I also caught this pike two casts later. Not a big one, but it did do something I've never seen a pike do in the river. As I was reeling it in, it made a run straight at me, took a hard right about 20 yards away and came out 5 feet out of the water as it did a backflip in the air. Pretty sweet air I must say.

I also found some wild onions to go with my morel pasta I'm making tonight.

River is still a bit high and the bite went dead as soon as the sun got above the treeline. I also hooked a hammerhandle, but he came unbuttoned at me feet. Saw a ton of toads and water snakes today as well.

And now, a quick PSA. Bowfin a.k.a. dogfish a.k.a. grunnel are NOT trash fish. They are an essential part of the river's ecosystem and put up a hell of a fight as well. They are not only a prehistoric fish, but they perform population control on panfish so there is limited stunted growth and also help maintain balanced fish populations. It will be their spawning time soon and the male's fins turn a very cool emerald/blue color, so they are a pretty stunning fish to behold this time of year. Please do the river a favor and throw back your bowfin instead of throwing them in the bushes. Thanks.

Bowfin are really cool and fight like crazy. I have seen some truly huge ones in Lake Geneva. There are pre-historic and have remained unchainged for millions of years.

Oh yeah, bowfin are MEAN. Look what one did to my Shallow Shad Rap:

They fight like Hell and if you catch 'em shallow they make a big wake coming for your lure. Awesome.

That's funny you say that Maliboo because when I cast saw a wake which I thought was a carp near my bait. Nope. That bowfin hit like a ton of bricks. I posted something on here last year about places to target bowfin and I think Ed or one of the other moderators pointed me towards the Desplaines Conservation Area. I might take a trip out there tomorrow with some topwater frogs and cutbait to see whats lurking around the backwaters.

Nice job Frank :)2 Glad you are having some luck. Those bowfins are nerve wrenchingly aggressive when they get close. I don't blame you for loosing him at the shore. I got 3 last summer and lost 2 canoe side, one shook loose and the bigger one was a botched net job by my wifes little brother. He had the net in the water waiting for me, the fish bolted past the net and hooked the X-rap, I saw the split ring shoot past my face; It never had a chance.

We gotta meet up this summer and rip some lips fo sho.

I have only ever seen one. My son hooked into one on the Chain a few years back. One hell of a fight. Snapped the line at the boat.

I think I traumatized the poor kid...

I was pretty hot, the fish was huge, I kept saying "I am not mad at you, it is not your fault. It happens."

Nice catch :)2 :)2 :)2 I remember renting a how to fly fish video from that Library and then roll casting on the other side of the river there.

Now that I look at it. I was casting the EB Dupage at hidden lakes bridge for fun. {B4 Round Meadow lake was born}
Not expecting to catch anything I caught one of those but much smaller. I noticed the teeth but never knew what I had caught til now. :)2
Learned something new again today. :)31
I caught one too and it was a big one

Just ran across this thread...and I frequent the spot in Maliboo's picture all the time. That is where I saw my first bowfin. A group of kids caught one and actually took it home to eat! They do put up a hell of a fight! Not sure if its too early to start targeting them, but I may have to try it this year!
