Bob, just at dusk the bass will sometimes be sucking insects off the surface. I love this type of casting because it's to rising fish. The casting is to the fish so it's all over the board. I use caddis and soft pillows in #10 (I like 'em big)and I dead drift the fly. If there is a lot of insect activity I will often twitch or even slide the fly across the surface to try and get their attention. Color doesn't matter a bit. I have a buddy that uses small poppers and he does well. I'm trying to remember where they were the last time and I think it was slow water after a riffle by the ex piano factory at St Charles. There was quite a bit of current so the drift didn't last long but it didn't have to. Most of the bass were smallish but it didn't matter.
