I have not experimented with a black caddis, but you can certainly tie the pattern with any color of hair. I am also not familiar with the Deschutes caddis by name, but the wing and the hackle setup on the "Pinch of Hair" is identical to most mainstream elk-hair caddis patterns. It just does not have a body or a tail. I also add less elk hair than many patterns call for, maybe only 8-10 strands of elk hair. So maybe the fly should be called "Very Small Pinch of Hair." I think its effectiveness on heavily fished rivers is due in part to its simplicity and its sparse dressing. Also, in the West I liked to tie it quite small, #18 and #20.
