I was looking over some photos and came across some that showed the best fly fishing for smallmouth I've ever had. It's Port Huron in MI - right on the tip of "the thumb". There is a series of gravel bars extending into Lake Huron that you can literally wade for a mile into the lake and never push the limits of chest waders. In the warly part ofthe season (Seems to me it was June) the bass are in prespawn and are everywhere on these bars. You can sight cast to them if you use polarized glasses. Standard offerings - Clousers, Teeny Leches, bog buggers - and take some poppers and Sneaky Petes. I also remember a "pet gar" who followed us around all day. My trips there produced fish in the 2-3# range all day, with my largest going a little over 4#. Naturally, all the biger fish I had on got off. I've seen numerous pictures of 5 and 6# smallmouth from here. It's really cool. I know it's a long drive, butI used to do it from Syracuse NY! Anyway, if you'rein that area in the erly season, make the effort to try it. It can be awesome.
