I went to the suggested site. Very nice article, very nice reading. It gave me some thoughts. I know places where carp tend to frequent, especially at the end of the day.
I will tie up some nymphs, hexes, caddis, mayfly, but I tie them weighted and with a very light, 4 or 6-pound-test mono weedguard. I've found that many flies designed and tied to ride hook up, actually don't. Just because you tie and weight a fly upside down doesn't mean it will ride that way. I would think, or hope, that a soft, 4 - 6 pound-test weedguard won't be particularly noticeable to the carp.
I thinking that with their sensitive sense of feel, this might prevent them from feeling the hook until I set: if its covered.
Also, if I use furry foam for the bodies of the nymphs, this will help to hold scent without gumming up the action of softer materials like marabou or filoplume, which has been a problem when using scents on flies.
Then again, couldn't I just use a lightwire, black, barbless fly tying hook, like a Tiemco 206BL and put a piece of corn or small section of nightcrawler on this? I'm not kidding. After chumming with corn, why not use a piece of corn and creep it through the mix as you would a nymph?
I'm thinking, this should work in still or slowly moving waters. In rivers, I have no idea how to catch carp with a fly rod, except by accident. They spook before I can ever get into casting range.
Sounds like another little fun project for the year 2002.
