this question gets asked a lot...of the options listed, i'd much more prefer the cabelas rod over the basspro, i cast both and they both kinda suck, but the bass beginner stuff is about as bad as it gets...if you can't face the music of a st. croix or a reddington starter kit, theres not too much else out there- however, i was at a flyfishing show in denver and i saw "elkhorn" rods there...150.00 rod plus a damn good reel in sizes up to #12, the #4 9' 4 piece my brother bought was only slightly worse than the sage xp4904 i bought. they caused a lot of people to think twice buying anything else at that show(including me...). maybe you can find elkhorn on the net...and then again, you still have to confront cost of line, etc. - but every time i bought a cheap rod, i have lived to regret it. get a good one and "ebay" it...
