The flip side to your comment about making the investement and have it sit around is that if you make an unwise investment, it may sit around because it's a pile of junk and no fun to fish with. I'd stick with something like a St. Croix Avid, which I think you can get into for about $90. Their service dept is second to none, and if you don't end up liking fly fishing then knock a few bucks off the rod and call me and I'll buy it from you.
