I guide for Carp in the summer here in Northern Michigan. Generally I fish them in some small lakes but mainly in Lake Michigan. They average 15lbs but 25pounders are quite common. I use 8 weight rods for the most part, large arbor reels with a quality drag, floating line mostly but use some intermediate sinking lines depending on depth. I fish them just like bonefish & permit. Working nymphs, buggers & long legged sinking spiders in short quick strips to create a visual effect of a bug working in the sand/silt. Around here lighter rods & regular arbor reels can be used but I've been spooled on a 6 weight too many times to go back to them. Good luck & enjoy. One heck of battle.
