But have you actually caught a brownie in there?
I've run across similar info in the past. The McHenry County Conservation District claims there is a small population of naturally reproducing brown trout in that stream.
When I heard this I got all excited and went out to fish it a few times last summer and autumn. There are a few nice holes, but much of the stream near Chemung is very shallow, also the stream bed (I think) was channelized. In the summer the water temps were much too high to support trout. There were outrageous numbers of chubs, though, and I did catch one bluegill, too.
If I'm not mistaken, they stock rainbows in the Spring. Rainbows are even less tolerant than browns of high water temps. Even if they survive the bait casting onslaught of the "trout season" they'll never survive the summer.
I really wish there were some nice trout water closer to Chicago. That drive up to the driftless area gets long.
Well, less than 3 weeks till Wisconsin early season!!! Hooray!!!
PS - if you've caught any browns in the pis, please let me know.
