For the reel, look into the Orvis Battenkill Large Arbor. Quite reasonably priced, spare spools are some of the cheapest out there and they are great quality. I have a couple that I use for everything, trout, salmon, steelhead, bass, and you bet Carp! Very fast retrieve, faster than alot of more expensive models, smooth drag, and works well in the cold or heat. I have some other reels from Cortland, Pfleuger, Ross, etc. but I like the Batt. LA the most (except for my one and only Orvis Vortex 7/8 which is my light saltwater baby).
For the rod, St.Croix Legend series stuff is pretty good. Very fast action. The new Orvis Trident TLS rods are wonderful, the same quality as the old Tridents but a little cheaper. The T3's are amazing but I haven't bit the bullet to purchase one of my own yet. (BTW I'm not an Orvis dealer, just like some of their stuff.)
Cast them all before you buy if you can cause they are alot different and what fits one person's casting & fishing styles may not fit yours.
P.S. You'll never regret getting the Renzetti!
