You didn't say what weight the rod is, 8 1/2ft 6, 7 or 8-weight. Plus how much do you want to spend? I'd recommend at least $100, then you may not have to replace the reel, although you will, with expereince, want to replace the rod.
If you can spend $100 - $120 I'd recommend the 5/6 Orvis Battenkill with disc drag. It will last you a lifetime and work for everything in fresh water
