I hope your eye is going to be okay, that is scary. Sunglasses may not help if the jig breaks the lense. It could send shards of glass or plastic into your eye.
I always try to fight a fish with the rod off to one side or the other, because that can happen. We've all probably had tackle come screaming back at us at some point in our fishing lifetime.
