Hey, let's not kid ourselves. How many times have you cut the line on a deeply-hooked fish, released it, and then said, "Oh, the hook will just rust way/be dissolved by the fish"?
Aren't we all just kidding ourselves when this happens? You know, out of sight, out of mind. Once the fish is gone, why should you worry about the fish? It's just a dumb animal, right? And you won't see the fish starve to death, now, will you?
I mean how would you survive with a big hook stuck in your throat?
Think about this the next time this happens to you.
(And, yes, I'm just as guilty as everyone else as I've done this far too many times in my 40+ years of fishing!).
