Eric, (et al.)
Thanks for the tips. I took my son to the west cantera lake on Monday 8/18. We fished from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. We too had similar luck with 8, 8-10" bass and a couple of gills. My son (11) caught two bass and also the 10" one (he was proud of that!). We were using black plastic worms texas rigged and a safety pin spinner jig with a black tail. The gills hit on a chartreuse rebel wee craw. We enjoyed ourselves, though he had on shorts and complained about "itching". He got a case of the "heebee jeebees".
Next we headed to the lakes at Fermilab - but when we got there we realized that we (I) forgot my tackle box so we immediately headed back to cantera and it was still there. (Still will go back and fish there).
Next we headed over to the lake on the SW corner of McCoy and Frontenac. We caught two small largemouth and a gill. Many fish were rising toward 7:00 p.m. so I threw out a topwater plug and nailed a 10" bass on that. That was fun. However we forgot our mosquito repellent and they won the battle at 7:15.
Two weeks ago we fished the West Duper at Washington and 95th - skunked.
We also fished the pond behind the Naperville police station - skunked there as well.
I'll be heading up to nordern wisc this weekend. Good luck fishing.
P.S.
I used to fish quite alot in the early 80's at ponds such as:
Alyesford (Cass north of I-55)
Some ponds on the SE corner of Lemont Rd. and 83rd (plainfield) - "Donut Lake"
Some subdivision ponds in Farmingdale - SW corner of Lemont and 83rd.
The "Knolls" pond - Rt. 83 and 63rd street.
(The knolls used to be a marian seminary and they stocked it with all sorts of species.)
Back then, I caught at least 1 4 pound LM in each lake.
Probably fished out by now, but who knows.
