Fished about an hour and a half before the weather got crappy. No sign of surface activity. Tried a large Assasin and a 1/2 oz Mann's Spinnerbait Chartreuse with big gold Willowleaf blades. Zero. Switched to a 1/8 oz Mepps Bass Killer(no longer made) with small silver willow leaf blades, and started to fish my way out. 1 12" bass, 1 12" pickeral(???),1 15" bass. Did switching to the smaller spinnerbait make the difference, I dunno.
The larger bass was a ferocious hit about 20 feet away, that almost took my Calcutta. I recently put 10lb fireline on my baitcaster. I love the no stretch characteristics, but the diameter is a bit too thin and it has a tendency to bury itself in the spool. I am gonna spool up next time with heavier stuff. Man what a difference, though. You can feel every thump of the blades.
