I grew up in Darien, 71st and Cass, behind Lace School in Farmingdale. I know the spots you're talking about. My haven was behind the LakeSide Club off Plainfield Rd. You know, the pool with the waterslide. There are some apartments behind there that have ponds that used to be loaded with nice largemouth. That's where I learned all about Texas-riggin', topwater, Rapalas. My Dad and I also pulled some respectable crappie out of there too. All released. We got them on flies.

I also fished a pond off of Cass, near I-55, called Hinswood. It's all private now, but before it was developed, it had some of the biggest f'n crappies I've seen anywhere. It was a real small, stream-fed pond. Frisbee-sized crappies.

Also, what is now known as Sawmill Creek off of Plainfield Rd. has (had?) a good lake behind it. It used to be know as Suicide Pond, because evidently some kid got killed riding his dirtbike there. There were some mammoth largemouth in there too.

This was all 10-12 years ago, but I'm still proud to say of the hundreds of fish I pulled out of these waters, I kept maybe four of them. Unfortunately, I doubt many are left. Our local waters really used to have some nice native fish. Well, it's been fun reminiscing.

Good Fishing.

Eric S.
