Surprised to hear about the line burying problem though I never tried 10 lb fire line on a baitcaster. If it helps, I have use 15 and 20 lb FL on my poor man's calcutta with no burying problems. I am glad to hear the pickeral survive in some of the Lemont quarries. Ages ago I had a secret quarry almost in the town that was full of them. Great fun on a fly rod early and late in the soft water season when nothing else was hitting. Like a lot of secret spot stories, this story had a sad ending. Tell you some time,
Good Fishing
: Fished about an hour and a half before the weather got crappy. No sign of surface activity. Tried a large Assasin and a 1/2 oz Mann's Spinnerbait Chartreuse with big gold Willowleaf blades. Zero. Switched to a 1/8 oz Mepps Bass Killer(no longer made) with small silver willow leaf blades, and started to fish my way out. 1 12" bass, 1 12" pickeral(???),1 15" bass. Did switching to the smaller spinnerbait make the difference, I dunno.
: The larger bass was a ferocious hit about 20 feet away, that almost took my Calcutta. I recently put 10lb fireline on my baitcaster. I love the no stretch characteristics, but the diameter is a bit too thin and it has a tendency to bury itself in the spool. I am gonna spool up next time with heavier stuff. Man what a difference, though. You can feel every thump of the blades.
