For anyone that feels like doing a little country driving, there is a lake (more like a pond) in DeKalb that may be worth a try. I haven't fished it in a while, maybe someone could tell us if you're still allowed to.

To get to this lake, you can take Rte. 38 (Roosevelt) west through Geneva and St. Charles, and Elburn, all the way to Watson Rd. (about seven miles west of the stop sign at Elburn). Turn left (south) on Watson, and take it until you are almost to the I-88 overpass. The lake is on the left on the north-east side of I-88 and Watson Rd. on a farmer's property. He comes around and asks for a couple bucks to fish there, and he's a pretty nice guy.

Or you can take I-88 west to Peace Rd. in DeKalb and go back east to Watson Rd. and go right (south) until you reach the lake.

If you've traveled west on I-88 near DeKalb, you've probably seen this lake off to the right side of the road, and a few cars and anglers around it. I hit it once in the fall on a Thursday afternoon (nobody out there) when a cold front was approaching. Using a spinnerbait on the end of the lake where the waves were hitting, I caught 18 largemouth in an hour. All were 13" - 19". Also, the farmer has Polaroid's of fish caught there. Some included nice channel cats, huge crappie, and other largemouth. I've seen guys blue-gilling with fly rods too.

Again, I'm not real sure if you can still fish there, so anyone willing to scout it out, let us know. Or if you're taking a drive west on I-88, keep an eye out for anglers there.

I'll send a pic of a nice bass I caught in late spring there to Ed for posting.

Good Fishing.

Eric S.
