It isn't original, but I always have best luck using the classic: minnow on hook under a float. In my local crappie pond, they seems to hang about an arm length's deep, on the deep side of a weedbed (lucky it's not that wide, and is an easy cast from shore). I've also had luck with light "maribou" jigs uner the float.
