I haven't fished topwater for largemouth in a few weeks. However, I fished heavily for them during the warm weather of the summer. I did notice that my style of fishing topwater baits has sped up dramatically over the last few years. I have a Calcutta 251 baitcaster and I can barely crank it fast enough to get the action I want on a buzzbait. Also, when working topwater frogs, I hardly ever pause, almost constant erratic action. I've also thrown Pop-R's and just don't have the patience anymore to wait, I pop them pretty fast and hard to make some big splashes. A favorite thing to do with Pop-R's is to hold the rod tip down and pull hard to the left about the length of the rod, this makes them dive under a few inches and leaves a bubble trail. When they surface back up, a lot of times they get nailed. I think a lot of what made my style change is that I'm used to throwing baits like Aglias and spinnerbaits, when you're used to covering a lot of water with a lure, switching to a slow presentation is sometimes hard to do. But, going fast with topwater seems to be working.
Good Fishing.
