: Pat, in NE IL there is no such thing as an *average year* for ice fishing;-) With the crazy swings in weather we get how much ice we get is anyones guess. Last year was the shortest ice fishing season I can remember with the least amount of ice about 6" max. The year before that we had close to 2 feet and the ice came close to lasting into april. The most I've seen is 3 feet. This year we've got about a foot in most places. The key is get out when you can.
