If you are looking for a lake near by that will give steady action for kids as well as an adult, go to Mallard. Fish the east pier with small to medium fatheads about 4-6 feet under a small float. You will light up the crappies, yellow bass (even a occasional white bass), largemouth, occasional walleye and possible even a nice pike (i landed a 35.5 inch Northern last April on a 2 inch fathead under a float 10 feet off the pier). This kind of action won't start up until at least the first or second week of April at the earliest. The only problem is the crappie always seem to run on the small side but every once in a while you'll get a 10 inch + fish. Good luck!
