Light turn out for this tournament with 16 teams. Joe Egan and substitute team member Jim McDonnel took the honors with a four smallmouth from Lake Michigan that weigh-in at 8.66 lbs. beating the team of Jim Fett and Tony Macino by 5 one-hundreds of a pound. What made the victory sweeter for Egan and McDonnel was the fact that at the last tournament Egan lost his big engine to brake down and had to find a partner with a boat to fish with him. McDonnel came to the rescue with his 35 HP Mercury, 16' aluminum Tacker bass boat. The two took that boat out onto Lake Michigan in heave waves and put 4 in the boat within an hour. The team of Fett and Macino also where on the Lake and had 4 smallmouth that weight of 8.61 lbs. Taking 3rd place was the team of Al Huhra and Jeff Miller with four smallmouth from the big pond too. There weight of 8.00 lbs even. Big Bass honors went to the team of Howard Malinowsky and his son Chris with a 4.24 smallmouth from Lake Michigan. East winds on Sunday kept a lot of teams off the Lake. I for one tried to get to my fish and only made it to Gary, Indiana. Fighting 4 to 6 footer on the way there was all I could take. My plans where to fish the Port of Indiana area where I had nice catches days before. The ride back from Gary saw my son and I in 8 to 10 foot waves. Best bait for the tournament was a tube which most teams in the cash used. Edward D. Bohn
