: : : :
: : : : : Where can you salmon snag and when?
: : : : : Thank you!
: : : : WHY DON'T YOU TRY TO CATCH THEM THE RIGHT WAY??? SNAGGING IS NOT FISHING!!!
: : : =========
: : : Snagging isn't "fishing" in the most accepted way but it is legal.
: : : I've been interested in anyones opinions on this subject.
: : : Since the salmon will die anyway what is the harm in it?
: : : My first reaction is that it's not good but since the spawn isn't succesful anyway I see nothing wrong with someone using this time to fill their freezer, am I wrong?
: : I still remember quite fondly the first salmon I caught back in high school and I caught it snagging.
: : I've since gone on to develop more fishing tactics, including floating dry flys in the blue ribbon trout streams in New England.
: : But, I will not knock snagging as a fishing tactic when done in a legal context. Those king salmon put up one heck of a fight
: : when you're trying to bring them in by their butt. Besides, how much "fishing" is there when you're out there monotonously throwing and retrieving
: : some spoon or crankbait until it by chance crosses a path of a fish and it decides to hit ??? I think the fight is a lot better when you snag a king salmon versus when you
: : catch on lures. Of course, snagging just intuitively feels more primitive, but I think one of the elements of this activity that I relate to is on a more gutteral/primitive level.
: : I can't understand people who fish purely with flies and would otherwise not even bother to fish. I think these people are pursuing image more than anything else. But, oh well, whatever floats their boat, I guess.....
: The reason snagging should be outlawed in Ill and everywhere else for that matter is that a snag hook does not have eyes. It hooks steelhead, Browns ect and it kills all of them. If salmon were the only fish that were in the harbors and lagoons it would be fine but the other fish I mentioned go in there to eat the salmon roe and become victims to the snaggers. There is no skill in it and you cant target a specific type of fish. Also there are 5 times as many illegal snaggers as there are legal ones. Just go into burnham harbor about 2 am. They spoil it for the regular fisherman. You will see them snagging in open water which is illegal and in the harbors they damage boats and sails. A snagger would rather ruin a boats 2000 dollar sail trying to get his 50 cent hook back instead of cutting his line. The steelhead and brown trout that are killed or poached by the snaggers do not die in the fall and there lifespans are cut short for the sport fisherman.
