Depth finders work well in the rivers to find holes and drop offs etc... however with the rivers around here being primarily shallow don't count on them to always tell you if theres fish under you or not. If your in 10 ft of water or more you'll pick up fish but in the Rock River and most of the back waters of the Mississippi River you'll find few places with more than 3-6 feet of water. So I would suggest you start off with a lower power fish locator because you will get better shallow water readings with a lower power unit and your primary use is to read the bottom and not necesarily to find fish, ( in shallow water the fish will move out from under the boat plus the transducer cone is so small you won't see the fish anyway )
