I never fished for them in the Gulf but when we visit the Outer Banks of NC we would catch them off the pier.
We used taylor blues for bait, bluefish 1-2 pounds are called taylor blues.
2 poles were used though and I can't imagine how you would do it fishing the surf. One line went out with alot of weight and then the fighting pole with bait attached was slid down the weight line.
Sand sharks were common but the most interesting was a 5 1/2 foot hammerhead.
Now that's a weird looking fish!
