All of these guys have given you some good advice about adjustment, now let me add my two cents, first: when you make a cast roll your wrist so that the right side of the reel faces up at the end of your cast (left side up if your a southpaw) second: although they say your lure should free fall slowly when you disengage the spool...until you get the hang of bait casting keep it a little tighter, set the adjuster so the lure slowly drops then tighten it just a tad more, you'll get shorter casts but less "professional overrun" and here's the "Honey Tip" make a cast ( or walk out if your afraid you might birdnest) a length of line equal to or a little longer than the length of your average cast, now take some black electrical tape & place it on your spool so that no more line will run out, reel it back up, tie on a lure, make your lure weight adjustment & start practicing, if you do birdnest it will only involve the length of one good cast, saving you line, wasted time, and the frustration which causes many would-be baitcasters to go running back to their spinning gear, as you grow in you skills & confidence you can loosen up the adjustment & start making longer casts (after you remove the tape of course) and try to avoid casting "into the wind" a high profile lure thrown into the wind will blow back at you causing slack in your line which in turn will cause...you guessed it..Birdnest! Once you get the hang of it all you'll forget you even own a spinning reel, then you can start working on Pitchin' & Flippin' ...but that's for another post. Hope this helped a little. Good luck!
