The buzz around the takeoff ramp this morning was mostly about how well most of the teams pre tournament practice went on Saturday and that there should be a good weigh-in this afternoon? But the real question of the day was? Would the 15 million gallons of raw sewage that spilled into the mouth of the Calumet River and Lake Michigan effect the bass population within the area of the spill?
That question was answered when the BATTERIES PLUS father, son team of Francis (Willowbrook) and Frank (Crest Hill) Monnett weigh-in four (8.38 lbs) smallmouth from the spill area to win the 5th CRBT tournament of the year. The two collected $516.00 for there effort. "I was in there yesterday and had mostly short fish said Francis, But we only had two fish with about 40 minutes to go so we went back there. It was good that we did because I hooked into a keeper right away and then a few minutes later my son got the other. You know when I stopped here yesterday I didn't know about the spill until my son Frank told me today when I stop the boat there. If I would have know that I don't think I would have fished it at all. Its good that I didn't know. "Those two fish came on green pumpkin tube baits said Frank and with the way the claimer winds where today it helped us. We stayed in the river all day."
Second place ($288.00) went to the CPD team of David Matual (Chicago) and Carlos Ferrer (Chicago). The two have finished in the money slots 4 out of the 5 tournaments thus far and have jumped out to a twenty-one point lead in the Team Of The Year race. "We had to work hard today just to get the four we weighed (7.95 lbs). The wind didn't blow like it did yesterday and it hurt a lot of good teams here today says Carlos, we moved a lot and picked one up at a time in different spots."
Missing second place by one-hundredth of an ounce was George Liddle Sr. and Jack Gallagher both of Alsip. The two had two smallmouth and one largemouth that went 7.94 pounds and a check for $192.00. They also had the big bass of the tournament with a 3.10 lbs smallmouth ($230.00). " I guess we got that one-hundredth back with the big fish pot said Liddle after edging out the team of Gerald and Tony Petraitis big bass (3.09 lb) They finished 4th ($120.00) with 2 fish at 4.96 lbs. The last pay slot with 2 fish weighing 4.38 pounds and a payday of $83.00.
