Wind, waves, and rain made it quite a day for the 26 teams that fished the sixth Calumet River Bass Tournament for 2001, on Sunday the 19th of September. But like in most tournament someone always figures out how to catch them. The team of Greg Newcom (Tinley Park) and Doug Stremplewski (Dyer, IN) weigh 5 largemouth bass at 8.65 pounds from the Calumet River to take the win, plus the $560.00 first place award. "We stayed real closes seeing we don't have a big rig, said Doug it was still hard to fish with the wind blowing like it was." "Yep, said Greg some of the time we had to hold onto something hanging off the bridges or structure we were fishing. Fished one handed most of the day." The two told the crowd at the wiegh-in that they used dark greet tube baits to take their five largemouth.

Second place with three smallmouth from southern Lake Michigan with a weight of 7.42 lbs which also included the big bass of the tournament at 3.03 lbs and was worth $260.00 went to Michael G. Nega (Orland Park) and brother Joseph M. Nega (Chicago). "The morning ride wasn't to bad but the ride back took us an hour and a half. We fought five to six footers coming back" said Joseph. We almost lost our big bass when the handle on the net broke said Michael lucky she was hooked well. Michael also told us that all there fish also came on Pumkin/green tube baits rigged on 1/2 oz. lead head jigs. The two took home a check for $329.00 for there work.

Third place and a check for $219.00 was the father son team of Francis Monnett (Willowbrook) and Frank Monnett (Crest Hill). The pair had 2 fish at 3.50 pounds. Forth place with one smallmouth and second biggest fish at 2.71 pounds was George Liddle Sr. (Alsip) and Jack Gallagher (Alsip) the two took home a check for $137.00. The last pay slot of $98.00 went to Joe Egan (Oak Lawn) and Mike Egan (Crestwood) and weigh one fish also 1.68 pounds.

This tournament also closed the gap between a lot of the teams at the top of the 2001 standing for the TEAM OF THE YEAR honors. The teams take there best six of seven tournaments points and with one tournament remaining its still possible that any of the top four teams can take it. leading right now is the Chicago P.D. team of David Matual / Carlos Ferrer with 264 points Second - Francis Monnett / Frank Monnett 254 points. Third - Michael Nega / Joseph M. Nega 248 points. Forth - Craig Newcom / Doug Stremplewski 235 points. Dropping from the race was the team of Howard Malinowski / Chris Malinowski with not weighting a fish on Sunday and only getting 10 show up points which was there second of the season. Only 9 teams of the 26 had fish to weigh with a total of only 16 fish at 30.17 pounds.
