Calume River Bass Tournament 2001 Classic
The Northeast winds that blew into the southern basin of Lake Michigan this past week have made water clarity nonexistent, but for only a few areas that is stained at best. These conditions have made it difficult for most of the 2001 CRBT Classic contenders. “I’ve never seen it this bad,” said George Liddle Sr. It’s hard to find anything that’s somewhat clear. We had two short fish today for our efforts.” That was not the case for the team of Howard and Chris Malinowski for they were the only team that had a six fish limit to take the first day lead with 11.17 lb. of smallmouth. “George is right,” says Howard. “You need to find cleaner water and when you find it you can get bit.” Howard’s and Chris’s quest for another back to back win this season is to tie the CRBT record set last year by the team of Ed & Chris Bohn. “We don’t have the 10 pound lead like you had last year. It’s still anyone’s tournament. 3.25 pounds can be made up with just one fish here.” says Chris Malinowski.”
2001 Team of the Year David Matual & Carlos Ferre had day one Big Bass honors with a 3.85 lb. smallmouth ($150.). It helped them take second place with 7.92 lb. Not far behind is the Wildcard team of Mike Skwira & Jim Fett with 7.28 lb. But the big news at this afternoon’s weigh-in was the team of Jeff Miller & Al Huhra when Jeff told the weigh-in crowd that they didn’t have a fish until 1:30 this afternoon. “We pulled up on a spot we haven’t fished in two years. I made a cast, fish on. Al made a cast, fish on. I made a cast, fish on but lost. Al made a cast, fish on. By the time it was all done we could only boat 3 losing 5 at the boat and time ran out on us. But you bet we’ll be there tomorrow and we’re going to stay all day. They’re stacked in this one small area and its almost every cast. We needed another 30 minutes today.”
Sunday’s Finial weigh-in at 3:00 PM will take place at Marty’s Waterfront Pub 14042 Croissant Drive Burnham, IL 3 blocks west of 141st and Torrence Ave.
