Calumet River Bass Tournament 2001 Classic September 30th
The second day started with the first delay ever for a CRBT tournament due to dense fog. Tournament director Ed Bohn held the teams for two hours and twenty-two minutes for safe conditions. That meant that the teams had less fishing time because they were still due back for the 3 PM weigh-in or face disqualification of their day’s weight.
The team of Joseph Egan and Mike Egan along with day two substitute, Jim McDannel scored a come from behind victory with the heaviest limit (6 fish) of the tournament with 17.19 lb., which also included the big bass of the day at 3.84 pounds. Their two day total of 24.34 pounds was ample for the win. Normally substitutes are not allowed in classic events unless there are unavoidable circumstances and the tournament director determines if a substitute shall be allowed. “I called Ed last night after finding out that my brother Mike had family medical problems and wasn’t sure if he would make it. I asked Ed if I could use a substitute and said that Jim was my choice. Man I’m glad he OK’d it, Jim put the first four fish in the boat. Hit the big fish of the day with his fourth cast of the late morning,” said Joe Egan. “I didn’t have any red wiggle-warts but I got two fish with a chrome/blue back wiggle-wart. After we got our limit we went salmon fishing.” Jim McDannel told the weigh-in crowd that this last spring the team of Mike and Joe Nega used red wiggle-warts to win a tournament in almost the same conditions, so he figured that he would try it. It worked. We fished the same place that Joe and Mike had their four keepers yesterday, just south of Calumet Harbor. The win was worth $1500 cash and a $1000 Ranger Boat Inc. purchase certificate for a total $2500 dollars.
Craig Newcom and Doug Stremplewski took second place worth $925 in cash and prize. The two managed the only other six fish limit to hit the scales of the day with 13.14 pounds. Added to their weight of yesterday they totaled 19.58 pounds.
Third place worth $625 in cash and prize was the first day leaders of Howard and Chris Malinowski who only weighed 3 fish for 6.27 pounds, adding to their leading weight to total 17.44 pounds. “ We went north today, round trip about 120 miles. I knew our fish wouldn’t hold up that we had yesterday. So we figured we’d see if the spot I had last tournament would produce again. The delay we had this morning didn’t help neither,” said Howard. One amusing note of the tournament was Jim Dwyer who managed to bring in a walleye and asked us to give him an official weight on it. We obliged and it totaled 7.04 lbs. When asked if it could be added to his total catch for the day, the tournament director reluctantly denied his request. All fish were returned to Lake Michigan Calumet Harbor alive after a Catch and Release treatment.
