On Feb. 7, 2002, the Champaign-Urbana Bass Club awarded its inaugural Ron Ward Memorial Scholarship to Steven Cooke, a graduate student at the University of Illinois. Steven has been involved in extensive largemouth and smallmouth bass research with the Illinois Natural History Survey. His research deals with the various types of stress placed on bass and its effect on survival and reproductivity. Overseeing Steven's work was Dr. David Philipp, senior scientist with the Center for Aquatic Ecology and one who has been quoted on several occasions in Bassmaster magazine in articles relating to Largemouth Bass Virus. Dr. Philipp's glowing recommendation of Steve played no small part in our scholarship decision. B.A.S.S. Times is planning two articles on Steve and our chapter's new relationship with the Illinois Natural History Survey. The articles are planned for the May issue. We are very excited about this relationship and have as a goal to endow an entire research project in the very near future.

On Aug. 4, 2002, we will host the 2nd annual Ron Ward Memorial Scholarship Tournament on Lake Shelbyville. The purpose of this two-person team tournament is to raise funds for our next scholarship. If any of you fellow bass fishermen or fellow Federation members would like to support our efforts to assist this important research by participating or making a donation, please check out our new website at: www.cubass.com and contact a board member; or you may call me at: 217/398-8128.
