Default Guidance please

Good Afternoon all! My buddy and I are going out to fish the DuPage River in Plainfield Sunday morning. He has never caught a smallmouth in his life, so I want to be able to get him at least one. I have a plan in my head on where to fish and what to use, but I am inexperienced when it comes to river fishing. I know the basics and that is about it. Our issue is we are shore bound as we do not have waders. We will be using light spinning gear. Any tips or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Chuck

craw pattern plastics would probably be a good place to start. Looks like rain tomorrow, that's gonna hurt. They will hide in spots that look too small for a fish. Cover as much water as possible, and hit the available structure hard. Downed wood, behind big rocks, eddys and seams and such. Always hit in front of any outflows or culverts, and make sure to cover any bridge pylons.

you ever see a guy wading or floating and notice where a large percentage of casts are made?.... to shore. Look for turns and meanders that affect the flow of the river, and fish places where the fish can hide for an easy ambush on passing prey. Look for the obvious v-shaped pattern on the top of the water indicating an underwater obstruction. you want to send at least 10 casts to each current break, hitting it from every angle possible. Most of my fish are caught hiding within 10ft of the shore.

Dont let the lack of waders deter you from getting in the river. I wet wade July-September, last year into October. I only bust out the waders when I get cold. A good shower will wash off even the Fox residue, pretend you're 13 again. It's not like you cant cast clear across the river anyway, the advantage of wading is being able to manipulate the angles and actually make a decent cast without snagging an overhanging tree.

Thanks guys! I was looking forward to the outing, but with this rain who knows what is going to happen now. I will have to see what the water flow looks like to see if I am going to chance wet wading. Again, thanks for the tips, they are greatly appreciated!!!
