Default what a mudhole!

I was reading through some of the old posts on this thread and decided to head up north of Gurnee yesterday and give it a shot. I was after dogfish. Upon reaching the recommended location I was greeted by the disappointing sight of a stagnant pool of muddy water that was all of 16" deep in the middle... Oh well...I had come this far... Within 5 minutes of tossing out a roach on a catfish rig I caught my first ever DP pike, a frisky 25" model that promptly tried to bite my thumb off. Within seconds my entire hand was covered with gore and a passerby thought that I was seriously injured...amazing how much blood can come out of a small gash! Luckily I keep a first-aid kit in the truck and after a few repairs I was back at it. I immediately caught a 3lb carp on a piece of cheese. This was followed by another 18" pike on a roach, a 1lb dogfish on a roach, another 20" pike on a small roostertail spinner, and capped off by a 25lb snapping turtle that somehow managed to sit down on a piece of cheddar and snag itself in a hind leg. He was pissed when I finally hauled him out of the water for some surgery! All still swimming except the 25" pike. I released it immediately but if was floating belly-up a half-hour later so I took it home and fed the possums. Fished from about noon to 5.

18lbs would have been a state record.

That's what the guy who caught it said. http://www.bowfinanglers.com/
I've caught a few over the years, but nothing over 8 lbs. I always let them go...it's a cool fish, not caught very often, fights like ****, and swam around the toes of the dinosaurs.

I've caught tons of them while bass fishing in Florida, Tennessee and South Carolina. Gotta give them credit as a great fight, had one that I estimate was easily 15lbs follow up a spinner bait on the Suwannee River a few years back, figure 8 didn't work to get him to hit it though. My biggest is right around 10, never weighed them though.
