Default Wading the Des Plaines

So I've been trying to fish this river for a while, in several different places from Lyons up to Wheeling, and I've fallen into the river a handful of times trying to negotiate the slick sides and overgrowth. I don't mind getting wet, I mean I bathe every month or so anyways, but how is this river for wading in that stretch? It seems like it would be a mucky bottom for the most part, with lots of hidden holes and stuff.

I really need a kayak, but until that happens, is this river wadeable when the water is at normal levels, or will I need the fire department to extract me from my boots mid-river?

Where a lightweight comfortable life jacket. We pulled one out of the Mazon river today and he is fighting for his life. We pull many a folks out of the Dupage River every year also because of stupid things. If your wearing a life jacket at least you have a chance. Not every firefighter is equipped or trained to pull people out of all types of water, I am fortunate to be on Departments that do.

I'm really looking forward to hearing the answer to this as well. If you want a wading buddy 303 let me know. I have fished the des plaines from libertyville up to wadsworth, and have always wanted to wade it. I'm sick of navigating shoreline and not being able to cast where I'd like. I really can't imagine it being too dangerous to wade, but at least if you get stuck in mud you will have someone to help.
