you missed the boat on the rock creek frenzy. those bass have been sittin on beds since monday night. your best bet is to hit the main river now. the water is coming down quick and clearing up nice. good luck.

i agree wit hK3rat. thaose bass in the creek will not even be a challange to catch b/c they are already picking up anything in there beds. id say try the main river or if you are up for some monster lmb hit maziona. i have been goin there during the river spawn and it seems like every year i hit the prime time for the lunkers of MAZ. but what ever you choice is you wil for sure get it to some fish

Good luck let me know where you went and how you did

The creek was hit hard all week.
I was in the State Park area every evening this week and after speaking with a friend decided to walk Rock Creek to verify the outright poaching that takes place there.
Counted 8 beds near the footbridge alone where smallies were absent from the nests- and no fry present.
Smallmouth are STILL catch and release only until June 15.
There is a sign at the top of the rock path with the phone numbers to report these dirtbags. Myself and Dale Bowman put it there, hoping to make a difference.
It's up to all of you though to make it work.

All these people from the local fishing sites that fish this creek, you'd like to think SOMEBODY is going to see something.
Whether it's in a bucket, on a stringer......
You installed the regulation signs, Norm- and they are still there.
In big letters on a yellow sign- "All smallmouth must be released from April 1- June 15. Its The Law!"
I posted the numbers to report the poachers.
District 21 State Police (who have instant radio contact to the local CPO).

Please tell me we are all capable of being good stewards in this watershed.

I saw the CO today in the park with binoculars. She was watching an interesting group down river. Not sure what happened but was nice to see her keeping an eye on things. As for a report on fishing I was a little disappointed with our results today. We (three good fisherman) caught maybe 6 nice bass and six or so small bass. Found the gar to play with for a while and saw plenty of carp jumping. Maybe we should have been in rock creek like everyone else. Couldn't they just close that to ALL fishing this time of year. I have never fished rock creek so maybe I am missing out on something but there sure seems to be enough fish in the main river to keep me happy. It would be pretty easy to close the creek to fishing this time of year, they do it in Michigan all the time (close a section of river that has a vulnerable spawning fish habbitat). What do you think?

You bring up a great point, as a matter of fact.
I've discussed it with people in the past.
The problem is the spring trout stockings.
This in itself is a ridiculous aspect of the catchable trout program anyway, and I've made it my life's mission to get the stocking of this non-native species from taking place in our rivers and streams- starting with Rock Creek.

When the program was started, the DNR was in much better shape to police the circus atmosphere that takes place as a result of the stockings.
I don't need to go into the state of staffing as it exists now.

Opening Day of the stockings, 2007-

As I pulled up that morning at the Deselm access lot, I noticed something was missing.

Oh, right.
Just the sign post with regulations and reporting numbers.
Found it ripped out of the ground and thrown in the woods.
Had to drag it back and pound it back into the frozen ground on a 20 degree morning. That post is 8 feet long, so you can see from the marking on the post how far into the ground it was sunk. Some clown went to much trouble to yank it out.

that kind of stuff is just plain BS. these laws are in place so that the river will always be one of the best smallie streams in the midwest. i have called the number before and reported people at the dam many times and at the creek. it is the only way anything will ever get done. im afraid the next step they will take is to shut the creek down from april 1st through june 15. that is why for the whole month of may and the first week of june im at Mazoina or im fishin for Cats.

Just let the fish do what they do
