Re: Check this out
A put and take fishery like the trout program. While the walleye may ATTEMPT to spawn, it appears to be a dismal failure.
"Stocking still vital to fishery
Still, chemical tagging shows that the stocking program remains the primary support for the river's walleye fishery, according to Lutterbie's latest report. Nearly 80 percent of the fish collected in 2006 were from previous stocking efforts.
"Hopefully we will see this number go down to the point that the walleye population will once again be supported through natural reproduction," Lutterbie said.
"The higher we can build the walleye population, the greater is the chance that they will reproduce naturally," Miller said.
Walleye are still facing stiff competition from other species and are threatened by the loss of habitat due to sedimentation in the river. Despite years of discussion, habitat restoration remains a distant and costly hope with a price tag climbing into the millions, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service."
