Default First time out / scumbags busted!

Hit the Kank for the first time ever (fishing) on Thurs. A buddy and me launched a small boat at the DCA and motored up river to do some exploring. Fishing was pretty slow, being the first nice day after a 2 week cold front, but we did manage a couple sauger.

Then, two guys in a bass boat show up. I can tell by their gear, and what they are throwing that they are fishing for bass. I see the first guy catch a smaller fish, maybe 12" then take it to the rear of the boat. I was 90% sure he threw it in the livewell, but the angle was hard to tell for certain. Kept fishing, and a little while later, the guy in the back of the boat catches one too. This time, I am positive it was a smallie. I keep an eye on him and sure as ever, he kneels down, opens the livewell, and drops em right in!! Not long after, another!!
I get on the cell phone and call up one of the local CPOs direct, and let him know what I saw. Not 15 minutes later, I saw him show up and wave the boat to shore. Don't know how many they had total, but they were caught with more than a couple.

CPOs can't be everywhere, but they respond to 0% of the calls they never receive!
Find out what State Police Dist you are located in, and call their non-emergency # to get a CPO. the hotline is an extra step IMO.
Best thing to do, When you see a CPO in your area, stop and ask him for his work cell #, and call them directly. Use this # to report violations only!!! Do NOT call them direct to ask about season dates, creel limits, or other information you can obtain on your own. (quick way to piss one off!!)

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. Report those violators guys!

You would think some one with the intlligence to own and opperate a bass boat would have the intelligence to look up and know the rules and regulations. This is not ment to be a knock on you either but before automatically declaring them "scumbags" did it occur to you they might be fishing the river for the first time and maybe didn't take the time to look up the rules. Having a bass boat doesn't mean they can't be bucket heads or poachers but not as likely and still doesn't mean they shouldn't know the rules for the body of water they are fishing. I meet people in the creek by my house all the time keeping bass during the closed season or undersized fish. When I see this I always go inform them of the rules. Most didn't have a clue but when the rule was explained almost every one of them immediately released their fish rathe than risk getting a ticket. Most seem genuinly greatful and not like they had been caught trying to get away with something. For those that didn't imediately release the fish, the call was discreetly made.

As a member of CLF, and before you declare yourself a hero, I suggest your re-read the mission of the formum you are posting on and rethink how you might have approached the situation.
The ChicagolandFishing.com Mission:

Our purpose is to provide Chicagoland Sportsmen with a gateway to information and entertainment in the tri-state area. We will continue to make a commitment to the development of ChicagolandFishing.com and increase it?s membership, as we know that our foundation is built from our members and the information that they provide. We promote the free exchange of information and the ongoing education of all of our members. Our slogan, "Anglers with Ethics", is intended to cause each angler to think beyond just catching fish. We want to promote ethics in our persuit of this wonderful sport. Some examples of this are buying your license, following the regulations, cleaning up your trash as well the trash of others, being polite to other anglers, not trespassing, and the list goes on. While being the perfectly ethical angler may be a lofty goal, we feel it is a worthwhile persuit.

Are you more interested in getting some strangers busted or protecting the fishery? I think a better approach might have been to motor over to them and inform them of the C&R regulation first. Had you done this and they quit keeping the smallies, this would have much better have accomplished the goal of protecting prespawn smallies. And what if the CPO was not able to make it to the river befor they left? Again, this is not ment to diss you in any way and I hope it does not come off that way, but it is ment to show you there are other ways then to assume because someone is violating a regulation, they are "scumbags" and deserve to be punished. Maybe you have never made a mistake If you had informed them and they still kept the fish I would not have hesitated to make the call and may have even gone over and applauded when the CPO busted them.

Education is the key to protecting the resource. Tickets are for those who refuse to be educated and I agree whole heartedly

Yak Man i would have done the sme thing. To take the law in to your own hands is just to risky. I have ran on to some real A holes out there and some really nice people. If thier not aware of the smallie reg they might not be aware of other regs. (Drinking while operating a motor vehicle) And the sad part is...ive seen people who are well aware of that still disobey.

Now say you did go over there and try and warn them, they had a few or maybe just dont like to be told what to do?? it can get heated real fast. Is that worth putting your life at risk? Not to me.

There is many different ways this situation could have played out and you chose the best one. to label them as Scumbags???? Eh..

You did the right thing, If you dont report it, nothing would have been done

Bad idea. All that is going to get you is a big ole "FU, mind your own business" You did the right thing by calling the DNR.
