Default 9/16 nirvana

Just an absolutely beautiful day at the river. No float trip today instead went for a wade. Water is extremely low and clear but the fishing was phenomenal. I started out the morning with the same 3" senko wacky but got to a stretch of river that I usually don't fish but found with the low level and clarity it was an easy wade. I decided to make the move from a proven fish catcher to some Yellow Magic. For 2 hours I had nothing but non-stop thrilling action from high flying smallies trying and usually succeeding in smashing that popper. All sizes were invited and all attended. When the sun rose and the top action slowed I went back to wacky and worked weed pools pockets and channels. Tons of fish are using all of those wavy weeds which form a pocket directly behind them. Not only the smallies but some big cats and tons of carp up in the weeds. The surprise of the day was a 10 pd carp that took the senko. All I can say is if you find a weed area pick that sucker apart the smallies are really aggressive right now and not afraid to move for a meal.

Sounds like you had a great day out there. I just picked up a couple of bags of those "proven fish catchers" to try the next time I'm out with the spinning gear, any rigging tips ?

Hey chfscott if you get a chance get the o-ring tool and a bag of extra o-rings I think cabelas has them. they make a wacky rigged senko last much longer. put the o-ring in the center of the senko hook under the o-ring with a weedless wacky hook weightless. Throw it up river and let sink down while reeling in the slack as it comes toward you. I like to keep my rod tip down close to the water and once in a while give it a few quick twitches. Oceanman don't be afraid to wade. Almost all of the water around the state park is wadeable especially now that level is around 1000. Check USGS Kankakee Wilmington for water levels. Under 2000 is pretty safe over 2500-3000 starts to get a little dicey not recommended unless you know the area well. Take your time and go slow and try to learn the river as you go and expand on it next time you go out. Most of the area around the SP is 1-2 deep with a couple of small areas that are 3-4 ft deep when flow is around 1000-1200.

Flukes have been on fire lately for consistant larger smallies. Spooks have been working very well to towards sundown and early morning till around 9am.
