I have been salmon fishing lately so this was my first fall trip to the river. I did quite well today with LOTS of smallies and some channel cats mixed in. I was using crawlers after I got out and realized I forgot hooks for the Flukes I had planned on using. River is very low and clear with lots of algae in the stiller water. Bite was still hot though. Several smallies were between 2 and 3 lbs but most were 1-2lbs. No walleye but wasn't really fishing for them either. I quit counting after 30 fish.
Taking pics when by yourself is a pain so these are just a few of the fish from today. The biggest one of the day slipped out of my hands before another angler could get a pic for me. Great day to be out and will be out many more times this fall
Like the colors on those fish. They always seem much more vivid then smallies from other Chicagoland waterways. You definatley faired better then my outing yesterday. Drifted minnows and threw spinners and jig and twisters and only managed a few Dinks. Water was so clear and low. Did you say you were getting those smallies on crawlers? I don't see that presentation for river smallies too often. were you just drifting them or hook and split shot. Even at sunset the "bite window" was very short. Looks like you did good and time of day wasn't too much an issue. That river gets me scratching my head, looks like you've got things under control. Nicely done!
There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."
With the crawlers. I would put a hook on a very small snap swivel to prevent line twist. I hook it so the crawler is hanging off and toss in a place where the current and slack water meet. One small split shot about 1 foot above is all i used. I am headed back out in a bit for a full day of fishing. We will see if things stay the same. I saw others do well on small plastics and top waters that day.
Can you give me directions good areas for wading for sml/mouth around I-55 ? And where do you park ?
Get off at the Lorenzo road exit and head towards the Valero gas station. When you get to the T take a left and it will take you right down by the bridge. Park in the gravel lot and follow the gated road and it will take you right down under the bridge.
