Default Year of the Pike

I've seen quite the uptick of pike this year on the Kankakee an Iroquois rivers. I caught this dandy off an in line spinner Sunday August 16. It was in a drainage ditch sitting in a foot of water. Also caught a smaller one minutes later. I took a rough measurement on my rod an checked it when I got home. I figured it to be just under 39 inches. Caught it at 10:30 in the morning. Put up quite the fight on my medium lite smallmouth rod. Would have loved to see this fish in the fall as it was rather skinny.

Not this one. This came out of a drainage ditch near Momence. I've got several out of the Iroquois though. Most are under 20 inches, but a few in the 25 to 30 inch range have showed. I no fisheries biologist although I play one an Internet forums. Maybe the cold winters we've had are beneficial to the pike as I have caught an seen more caught this year than probably the previous 5 combined. Every one has those spots that should hold fish an never do. This pike came out of a drainage ditch going into the river that's I always make afew casts to add never get a fish.ever! Until the day I caught this pike. Always cover water an never assume a stretch of water doesn't hold fish is probably the best practice I have adapted to be a better river fisherman.
