PalosBob and I fished Maple Lake on Sunday, 01/27/19 and the fish were in a cooperative mood. We both had a crib to our self and PlaosBob's seemed to be holding more crappie then gills as he landed 3 to 4 dozen of them, all around 7''. He also caught a smidgen of gills and one perch. He was using plastics.
My crib seemed to be mostly gills. I did try plastics but the smaller gills could not take it in so I switched to waxies to weed out the 4 to 5 inch ones (and there was plenty of those!).
I ended up keeping 11 gills that ran in the 6 - 7 inch range. Too bad most were closer to 6 inches than 7. The 7 inch crappie were not worth keeping as they were thin as thin could be. Talk about having little meat on them.
There were a few others fishing over cribs. One was over the double crib but I never checked to see how he was doing. A few anglers closer to the crib I was on were catching the usual dinks but word is they landed a nice catfish deadsticking with a minnow. Not sure if they caught it by the crib or somewhere else on the lake as they were all over the lake fishing here and there before they ended up at the crib.
DNR was out and for the first time the officer checked to see if my shanty had my name and address on it (it did). He was at Tampier before Maple and said very few out there so no report.
Ice was a good 6 inches thick.
